Tayra offers three main ways to work together: custom faculty-led university programs, open-enrollment tropical field courses, and logistical support for researchers. We also coordinate selected volunteer opportunities connected with conservation and community projects.

Participation depends on the program. Faculty-led programs are designed for university groups traveling with their professor. Field courses are open to eligible students, graduates, and other participants with a serious interest in the subject. Researchers and volunteers are reviewed according to project fit, experience, and field requirements.

Unless a specific proposal states otherwise, Tayra field-course pricing includes lodging, full meals, in-country ground and water transportation, scheduled transfers, program activities, and entrance fees, plus the academic instructors and local field support described for that course. Custom faculty-led programs receive their own detailed inclusion list.

No. International airfare is not included in Tayra field-course prices. Participants are responsible for their flights to and from the designated arrival airport, personal expenses, personal field equipment, and any university credit fees. We provide arrival and departure instructions before travel so flights can be coordinated correctly.

Programs operate primarily in Costa Rica and may also include Panama, depending on the academic objectives. Costa Rica itineraries can connect rainforest field stations, coastal ecosystems, protected areas, rural communities, and research sites. Camaquiri Conservation Initiative in northeastern Costa Rica is an important partner location for many programs.

Lodging ranges from field stations and locally owned accommodations to comfortable hotels, selected for safety, location, and program purpose. Meals are planned for active field days and normally feature Costa Rican cuisine. Dietary needs and allergies must be reported in advance; we will confirm what can be accommodated at each site.

Safety is built into itinerary design, transportation, lodging selection, field briefings, and daily decision-making. Participants receive preparation guidance and site-specific rules, and Tayra coordinates local support when plans must change. Travel still involves natural and operational risks, so participants must follow instructions, disclose relevant health information, and carry the required travel insurance.

University credit is not automatically included. Some students arrange independent study or transfer credit through their home institution. Because each university has different requirements, participants should obtain written approval from their academic adviser or registrar before committing to the course.

Choose the appropriate program and submit the online application or inquiry form. For Tayra field courses, the standard application deadline is 15 days before the course begins, but places may fill earlier. Applying early gives us more time to confirm fit, travel details, dietary needs, and required documentation.

Expect heat, humidity, rain, insects, uneven trails, and early field starts. Participants should be comfortable walking outdoors and following a full daily schedule. The exact packing list depends on the program, but usually includes sturdy footwear, quick-drying field clothing, rain protection, sun and insect protection, a reusable water bottle, and any course-specific equipment.
